Our team, in its 4th year focused specifically on a positive outlook and how to seek help, get help, and help others. The theme, "Take the First Step" is not only about others finding ways to de-stigmatize and approach loved ones about mental illness, but also to create an ongoing dialogue and debunk myths. Taking the first step applies to those struggling as well as emphasis on coping, using local resources, and getting help. We engaged in activities such as a team pizza party and discussion session, candy canes for lockers, mason jar compliments, coping cards, awareness posters/ribbons and tables, locker signs for members, and video filming sessions. Members attended a workshop in Elkader in late April and volunteered at the Thanksgiving Food Box packaging. We concluded our last meeting with election of officers as well as dog therapy! The MHAT 2017-18 Team agreed to create another student nominated and led role to help with the social media and writing side of things. Their title is: Scribe. Their duties include managing the website, curating and helping to edit the blog posts and "Coping Corner" for members, and printing and designing the annual roster and member posters. Our assembly brought in the speaker Dr. Katie Fassbinder Getz on April 20th, a noted Outstanding Mental Health Professional of the Year.
Taking the first step involves not only your own action to take care of your mental health, but finding ways and being brave enough to encourage others. Whether that is through just listening or approaching someone you normally don’t talk to or taking advantage of all the local resources available in your community, the first step is the hardest, but it is the most important.
